29May-4June2011 :: This Week
06Jun2011 [weekly]
This week was Sum, River of Gods, Hard Candy, and a couple of articles in the Instapaper queue.
- Read David Eagleman’s Sum (amazon), a beautiful collection of short stories about different hypothetical afterlives; it delightfully captures the scope of life and humanity and the stories we tell to give our lives meaning, and beyond wonder at what might come next is all about the little wonders in daily life.
- Having read an extract from The Dervish House, have started reading Ian McDonald’s River of Gods (amazon), the first in a trilogy of which the former is the third book; it’s so far awfully well written, a reminder of just how literary great science fiction can be.
- Watched Hard Candy (imdb); awfully confronting, but strong for it, and really well made; the few characters are strong, and difficult; Ellen Page plays a girl who suspects Patrick Wilson of sexually abusing young girls, so seeks to discover the truth and extract some sort of vengeance; as the story develops though, both characters twist and turn between being sympathetic and repulsive, serving to pull you in and really grapple with obscured darkness; it’s beautifully shot too, and framed really tight so it’s clear throughout that we’re only getting a part of the picture, that our characters are unreliable and that we can’t really trust anything we’re told.
- From the Instapaper archives, a couple of interesting articles on the state of the music industry, presented without comment ’cause I haven’t quite figured out my response there; How The Music Industry Is Killing Music And Blaming The Fans at The Quietus, and Lady GaGa flunks out of the College of American Pop Vestals at Capital New York.
