Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp do it again. A masterful piece of fantasy with just enough of a dark edge to keep it fascinating. And the weird little Oompa-Loompas and their songs are surprisingly entertaining. I always expect good things from this team, but this was better than expected!

I haven't seen the old movie, and it's been a long while since I read the book, but the film was faithful to my memories which was a pleasant surprise.

Burton once more does some interesting work with the theme of fatherhood (and father-son relationships, cf Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, &c). Christopher Lee as Wonka's father -slash- horror-movie dentist fits brilliantly with that theme.

While I was there I saw a trailer for Bride Corpse, another Burton/Depp/Bonham-Carter (who has a small but beautiful role as Charlie's mother) movie, in the style of Nightmare Before Christmas, and extremely weird looking. But that's a good thing with these guys. And now I _hope_ that Burton will make another Dahl, the material suits his style so well!
